Dr. Dudley is excited to offer this service to our patients. We have selected the Blomdahl Medical Ear-Piercing System which is only available to physicians.
What are the advantages of having your child’s ears pierced at Wildflower Pediatrics?
The Blomdahl medical ear-piercing system provides a safer procedure for piercing your child’s ears. The system uses a disposable cartridge that is replaced with every piercing and uses medical grade plastic to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. This system also eliminates the possibility of patient to patient cross contamination because only the single use part of the equipment ever comes in contact with the skin at the piercing site. You will also have access to Dr. Dudley who is trained in the medical technique and wound management. We also offer pre-procedure topical anesthesia, which is not available in non-medical settings. With this topical anesthetic, your child may experience a pinch or stinging sensation similar to a vaccine injection during the procedure.
Can I get ear piercing done at my child’s well, sick visit, or as a walk in?
Ear piercing will only be performed by appointment and not as an “Add-on” to another sick or well visit. That will allow Dr. Dudley enough time to perform the procedure, explain and answer questions about the aftercare, and allow the numbing cream to take effect.
Where do we pierce?
We only pierce ear lobes and do one piercing per ear lobe per visit. We will pierce a total of two earrings in each ear lobe. A second visit will be required to have the second pair of piercings completed in order to allow for proper healing time.
How much will it cost?
Your payment covers the cost of the numbing the ear prior to the procedure, piercing the ear(s), the ear-piercing studs and a permanent pair of hypoallergenic earrings.
2 ears: $100
1 ear: $50
Fees for ear piercing will not be filed to your insurance policy as this is a cosmetic procedure. All payments for this service are due at the time of service.
What type of earrings are used?
The earrings are in a sterile cartridge attached to the piercing device. They are made of a Swarovski crystal stud with a medical plastic base and post. Medical plastic is encouraged with the initial piercing to reduce the risk of developing a nickel allergy from the metal post. Blomdahl’s patented medical plastic ear piercing stud is the ONLY 0% nickel ear piercing stud in the world. There is no better way to help patients avoid developing nickel allergy during the ear-piercing process.
How old must my child be to have his/her ears pierced?
We recommend ear piercing between 3-7 months old and 7 years or older who are up to date with their tetanus vaccines. Waiting until 3 months of age ensures that your infant has had their first set of vaccines and allows the ear to grow big enough for accurate positioning of the earring. We do not recommend ear piercing between 7 months and 7 years of age because it may be difficult for your child to control his or her movements during the procedure. In addition, your child may not be cooperative enough to sit still and actively participate in the aftercare. Some exceptions to this age policy may be made at the discretion of your pediatrician.
What are the risks?
Ear piercing is a minor surgical procedure similar to stitches or abscess drainage. Despite precautions using a sterile technique, there is still a small but rare chance of infection, scarring, or allergic reaction. We will ask you to sign an informed consent waiver at the time of the procedure detailing these risks.
How do I care for the piercing afterwards?
We recommend NOT replacing the original ear-piercing studs for at least 6 weeks. After piercing, you must clean the earlobe with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride solution twice daily. Always use clean hands to touch ears and earrings. There is no need to rotate the Blomdahl medical grade plastic studs to prevent them from adhering to the skin. You will be provided with an aftercare instruction handout for more detailed information
